I went for a short ride the other day, and out of the blue my deluxe just quits. when I go to try to start it there is nothing. No speedo lites nothing. Not even a sound. I pulled the seat and started checking fuses, nothing, all good, I checked the voltage across the terminals and to ground and had like 17 volts. The only thing that seems to work is the horn and that is it.There wasn't any warning of this it just all of a sudden quit.
First check your battery connections are tight.
Next pull maxi fuse and remove battery and have it charged and load tested.
Do you keep the bike on a battery tender?
Any diagnostic codes?
Did you do any recent work on the bike?
If you need a new battery, go to the East Penn Deka website as they make all of the batteries for HD. Find a local distributor and get a new battery and save $40 over dealer price.
If your battery is good then I would start looking at bank angle sensor, stop/run switch, ignition switch, relays, frame ground strap.
If all else fails then might be the ECM.
17 volts sounds high...........chech your VR as well. But even if it is fubared the bike should start.
Been having the common circuit breaker problems on my '03 FLHTI. Spent $230 previous week electrical repair. Then following week at shop same as you, only sign of electrics was the horn. Bike pushed into shop, running ten minutes later. Told circuit breaker needs to be relocated away from heat of rear cylinder. this happened during our triple digit temp time of year. Service manager hooked me up with a 40 awg Maxifuse setup the current touring bikes are running and I plan on relocating to the left side cover where some of the fuses are located. I understand the connectors to the circuit breaker are going bad and raising resistance, thus heat to the circuit breaker. Plan on soldering everything, staying away from crimp terminals. Service Manager told me maxi fuses are not affected by ambiant temps and the circuit breakers are. Dunno, but what I have now doesn't work so I'll try something different. Plus the maxifuses are current production items.
