This may be hard to diagnose without seeing the bike, but here it goes. I have a 1998 Heritage Softail with a new battery. I was out riding yesterday and everything seemed fine. Towards the middle of the ride, I turned the bike off to ask someone a question, the bike would not restart, I had to jump start it.
On my way home, the bike was backfiring, speedometer didn't work, lights dim, etc., then it stalled while I was driving it. I know its an electrical problem, but have no idea where to start to diagnose/repair. Any help would be appreciated.
probably should start with checking the ground wire first. Sounds like a loose ground or maybe corosion at a connection. Be sure to check the frame connection too.
Also check the crimps at both ends of the (+) and (-) battery cables where the terminal is attached to the wire of the cable. There is one at each end of each cable. I've seen a few of those come loose.
