Yeah, sounds like you may have a "click" in it Did you yourself change the battery and the cables or did a dealer do it? If you did it you might want to recheck all of the connections to make sure you did it right, if dealer did it bring it back. Can you do a voltage check at the starter solenoid?
Nope no Voltmeter here in "recently single guy" land. There are several wires that run from the battery to the starter motor area. Which are you speaking of?
I replaced the battery... but I've done that about 4 times in the past 4 years(different bikes), and haven't goofed one up yet... but i'm not at all above thinking I may have made an error. The fact that the rest of the bike's lights and gauges come on when I turn my switch on lead me to believe I hooked everything up OK.
Is it possible for the starter solenoid to click in, and:
*not click in far enough
or
*not have enough "***" on the voltage/current to turn the motor over
You should have a battery lead and a fuse lead as well as a ground at the starter. This LINK might be of some help to you to see which wire is what if you don't have a manual. If your lights and all work, the battery isn't the problem it is with the starter or the connections at the starter. Multimeters are really cheap or you can borrow one to make sure that the proper voltage is getting to the starter. It might be a problem with the starter itself too, but I would check all the connections first.
Mike, what was the reason for the new battery in the first place?
The starter is the single largest current draw on your bike. The fact that the lights work is not enough to put the battery in the clear. I have seen bad "new" batteries before. It really should be load tested.
Don't overlook the starter relay. On the newer bikes you can swap the brake relay into its place, but I don't know about '94.
Hi Cindy ,I've been having starting problems with my flstc (see posts).I have just found out that the starter motor brushes were worn out. This might be of some help and its not a long or difficult job to do. Regards from Wales UK.
