Ignition/Tuner/ECM/Fuel InjectionNeed advice on ignition issues? Questions about a tuner? Have questions about a EFI calibration or Fuel Injection? Tips on Engine Diagnostics, how to get codes, and what they mean. Find your answers here.
I own a 2009 softtail custom and recently decided to upgrade the ECM to a thundermax with auto tune and a Roland Sands heavy breather inlet.
I have followed the install and youtube directions to a tee. When I go to enter the fuel map to the thundermax I keep getting an error message saying that serial port can not detect the module and I get a retry and abort option.
I have spoken with the retailer and the thundermax support and all they can say take it to a shop. The trouble is I can't move my bike unless I un-install the thundermax and reinstall the original ECM.
Well, I've taken the advice from thundermax and had my bike shipped to a dealer. It took them 10minutes and $100 of mine to tell me the unit is corrupt. I now have to get my bike back home, remove the unit and return it to the supplier for evaluation. I guess I'll find out how good Zippers after sales support is now. For a very straight forward install I must say that it has been one of the most frustrating, and costly, experiences I've had to date.
not sure if you have done it, but if you are using the serial to usb adaptor from zippers you have to use the disc that comes with the adaptor to load the drivers into windows before the adaptor will work. if you have done that i guess i can't help out. good luck.
The only time i get that response is when my cable is not plugged into the ecm all the way.
"Check to see that the cable is pushed in far enough. My cable has little ribs on it and it they are not down into the hole past the top edge then it is not pushed in far enough to make the connection thus giving you the error messaGE.
Good Luck
Sorry I didn't read all posts. You can reload all that you need to yourself. But if you don't have the confidence. Just send to them, they have been great with me. Every issue I have had was bacause of my lack of patiece with computer software. Other wise my fault. The electrical connection prob. was due to the fact that I rode thru over 500 mile of rain, and the steam comming off the motor flowed past two fuse blocks and resulted in that. When I started cleaning the fuses it was obvious.
Good Luck, and God Bless.
Jim.
Oh yea, the dealer's do not want you to use aftermarket stuff. They want to sell you their ecms. So take their advice with a grain of salt.
If you can find another t max user close to you he can get you up and going pretty quick.

The biggest issue I had was, the software on the disk. I had to uninstall it and download the newest version of the software. Everything was all good to go after that.
I too had issues connecting with the USB-Serial adapter although its been some time since I installed my unit. I do remember having to load the software to get it to work..about the same time I remembered I had an old laptop stored away and it had a serial port....and I didn't have to be so concerned about banging my laptop around the garage...loaded her up and worked great.....if you don't have one I'll bet a dozen doughnuts you could pick one up on Ebay for a pittance and have a dedicated garage computer. Last thing.....ThunderMax people have been GREAT....I had a few minor issues, and they were addressed inside of 24 hours when I contacted them. Tuning required me to send their MAP after using it some to get the final pops out...it runs great now...This all after 3 years, 4 dyno tunes with the dealer, with the HD ECM and all the condescending remarks I could handle for a lifetime...and a bike that ran worse every time they worked on it....I was going to sell it, but Zippers saved the day!! Don't believe their diagnosis as the other poster said they are brainwashed "Harley Only"...even if it doesn't work!! I live in the Finger Lakes, NY...if your near by would help!!
