I have had my 1989 1200 sporty for about five months. Have started having problems. I started to look at obvios areas and founf that the electronic sator system had been replaced with beaker points. Why would a previous owner do this? The VOES has also been removed leaving the vacume inlet to the carby ( a muniki 40 mm carb) open with no hose attached. Is this OK? The cam that operates the beaker points appears to be an add on. Itappears to be a after market sleave that had been fitted over the cam shaft with a bolt fitted into the end of the shaft. Is this ok? Does anyone know what gap the points should be set at? Would I be better off having the original electrical system installed? thanks to all for any respons. Roy Ozie from down under
Probably the reason it was "Modified" was that the prior owner had little or no knowledge of modern automotive electronics, or they had an ignition issue an felt that the best way to repair it was to revert the system to a point and breaker system.....
The modern electronics are effective for daily street use, but if you are looking to do a quality update/upgrade, take a look at a good ignition SYSTEM (Daytona, Crane, Accel to name a few)......
Sounds like yours will be a bit more intensive than a plug and play, as it was raped and cut up, but with a manual and some patience, you should be able to rectify it.....
As for the gap, an "Old School" trick is to set the gap at the thickness of a paper matchbook cover......
Gotta find the "Sweet Spot" for the timing and dwell....
Oh, and the VOES hole should be plugged if you are not going to use it.. But they are nice, as t is what controls your Spark Map with the electronic ignition system...
Bob, thanks for the advice, it was of help. If I were to fit new points and set to the appropriate settings (gap) as well as blocking off the vacume inlet to carby do you think it would run ok, or should I look at having another ignition system fitted. By the way I did check botton end and it isthe original that was with the bike (According to the numbers on the engine and frame. When seeing what had been done with points aded I through it may have been an earlier bottom end, and therefore more problems, but that was no so. Thanks again Roy (down under ossie)
