I recently purchased an '04 Softail from a Private Seller. The bike runs great, no issues what-so-ever with the exception of a strange noise coming from the starter when the engine is warm.
When I stop after riding (to get gas, rest ect.) and go to start it up, there is a strange grinding / clunking noise coming from the starter. It will always fire up, but the sound is definitely not normal. Anyone had a similar issue? Any ideas?
Can that part be replaced or does the entire starter need to be replaced? Item does not have a price associated with it...Also how hard is it to reach the starter?
You will have to remove the outer primary cover in order to remove the screw that holds the pinion gear on.
Remove the battery from the oil tank.
Remove the two screws inside and near the top of the oil tank.
Remove the nuts from the studs on the rubber isolators and slip the tank to one side to free the tank.
Prop up the tank to allow room to reach the two screws that hold the starter on. You may have to reach through the battery box to remove the battery cable. Remove the small plug from the starter.
If there is and end cover on the starter, it helps to remove it. Remove the screws then wiggle the starter out.
