Default Deuce wont start

New to the forum and would appreciate any help. Just recently acquired a 2000 Softail Deuce. It had been sitting for a couple years before I picked it up. Before I picked it up the previous owner decided to take it for a last ride. He topped off the gas tanked and finally got it started after jumping it with the car (not sure if the car was running while he jumped the bike). According to him while he was riding the bike backfired, the headlight went out, and several minutes later the bike died altogether.

As it sits now, the lights work and the engine turns but it just will not start.
I have replaced the gas, battery, spark plugs, coil, the main 30 circuit breaker and crank position sensor and still have had no luck.
When I pull the air filter and crack the throttle I can see fuel coming out. When I pull the plugs they are bone dry and are not getting any spark.

Sorry for the long winded post, but I'm at a loss with this and I hate to keep throwing parts at it. I wouldn't think he fried the ECU when he jumped it because he rode it after the fact.

forgot to mention, there are no gauges so I can't pull any codes and whatnot.

Just want to see what you find out. Need to do some research on what is different on my 04 before I throw any info out there. i am pretty knowledge on what makes mine work and how to trouble shoot. According to him should be taken with a grain of salt. Were you grounding plugs to head when you checked for spark? If so that is first thing to fix.

Forgive me for my ignorance but that's just placing the plug against the aluminum portion of the head correct? If so then yes I've done this...

It's probably your stator.

Or voltage regulator?

Check all plug in connectors, esm, coil, crank sensor for corrosion, clean and reinstall with dialectric grease. Have the battery load tested, it may fail to deliver required voltage to fire the coils under load, especially if it has sat neglected for 2 yrs.
Clean all battery connections, look for corrosion at battery cable terminals.
If that all proves to be ok, I'd suspect the crank sensor first. Common on older bikes.
Never boost a bike engine from a car/truck with the vehicle engine running, it can send spikes thru system that can take out all kinds of stuff. fwiw Fastrider124.

Battery is brand new. I've gone through most, if not all of the connections. There aren't many since this bike only has the essentials to make it run, no gauges, no turn signals. Battery is brand new, I knew that was dead. I've replaced both the crank sensor and the coil (since you mentioned them). I'm kind of working my way back from the spark plugs/ battery. I guess next is the stator and or voltage regulator. I saw a test procedure online somewhere for the voltage regulator. Is there a way to test the stator? I would think cam position sensor would be next (from my experience with cars).

If you put a charger on it will it start then, or start if it is push started?
If so, I'd still say a stator.
If you can get it started, ride it to your dealer and have them test it, and be prepared to have a plan.

If you have a good battery, you do not need to check stator or voltage regulator since it will run even with this broke, it just will not charge. Yes that is what I meant about grounding thread area of plug to cylinder. That completes so it can fire (spark). In fact, not doing this will kill coil and advance system. You need to get a spark. Have you changed out the 15 amp ignition and 15 amp accessories fuse? The 30 amp breaker was for the starter cranking. That was OK since it cranked. However it will not fire with a bad crank sensor or that connection bad.

Lion, I have it on a tender, and no it won't start. Haven't tried to push start, thought since I wasn't getting spark it wouldn't do me any good.
RIP, I pulled the fuses (there are only 3 and the maxi) and they were all good. So you don't think it's the voltage regulator or the stator?
