Starter Question
Afew weeks ago the bike (2008 FXD) would not turnover. I would get the rapid clicking sound which I think is the solenoid. I figured the battery had gone (5 years old). I tried to jump start it with the battery still connected and got the same results. The connections were good as the car idle changed when I tried to start the bike. I then took the battery out of the bike and connected the jumper cables to the cables. Hooked it to car and same result, lots of clicking. If I push the start button gently, it engages for a second and turns the motor over less than once, but then clicks.
Anyway, I am thinking it is the starter. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks for any help.
Randy
Rapid clicking is usually a symptom of low voltage at the solenoid.
You can`t troubleshoot a starting system until you know that you have a good battery.
Make sure the battery is fully charged and in good condition, if in doubt, have it load tested. Since the battery is 5 years old, it doesn`t owe you a thing at this point.
Make sure all electrical connections in the starter circuit are clean and secure.
Forget about how it works with jumper cables, they make a lousy connection.
And never jump your bike off of a running car. Turn the car off first.
