Short or other electrical problem
5 hour trip in the rain, got home fine, although did notice that towards the middle of the trip the directionals, when turned on started sounding thru my speakers.
few days later went to start the bike - dead
it was a new battery from late last year.
so I put it on the smart charger for a few days...
then tested like this:
1) voltage at battery - 13.0 (perhaps a 'little' high, but ok ?)
2) voltage at battery while running, up to about 5k rpm - went to about 14.5 voltage - would not go past that (regulator appears to be working that way)
3) pulled the wires off the regulator, checked the ohm on the stator side - showed 0... no resistance - sound ok so far
4) checked the wires on the 'non stator' side - ie the ones that should be connected to the battery side - showed 12.7 volts - I thought it should be the same as across the battery as in step 1...
Any help from the above analysis would be appreciated. I did not check the fuse - I could replace that and do the steps 1 and 4 again... or, perhaps, while thinking of it now, would it be possible that the 12.7 reading was because I put the bike under load with running it, and I should have done 1 and 4 'first'...
thanks for any insight. Don't think I want to listen to my riding buds who say it's probably just from the rain... since I have a 8 hour trip coming up.
