Went down to pick up my brother's '80 Super Glide (5600 miles, parked for 15 years). He had replaced the advance unit (Drag Specialities) and had it sputtering for a few seconds a couple of weeks ago. We were going to time it and get it running good. Things were progressing and we were getting close when we lost the timing light flash. Thinking the light had just burned out we tried to eyeball it and get close.
We finally check for spark and didn't have any front or rear. I reached to check the wire connection at the coil and it was HOT. I pulled the cover and it had cracked in a couple of places and was oozing.
Besides the coil just going bad, is there anything else that could cause the coil to short out and melt down? I don't want to put on a new coil and have it toasted.
OK, can't find a bare wire. Checked the wires top and bottom.
I read on another thread that there is a possibility that the cover could cause a ground. I checked the fit and couldn't see how that could happen but who knows. Any other suggestions?
While on the topic, I read in the DIY about changing over to an Electronic Ignition.
Educate me.
I'm not hopping up the bike, I just want it to run and be reliable. What is involved and needed to convert to an electronic ignition? If it is not too big of a deal or too expensive, I may just go straight to it.
Mike
Did you check over the points in the bike to see if they were operating and gapped correctly, if they were closed, this could heat up the coil also.
Changing over to electronic ignition is not a difficult thing to do for someone with basic skills that can work with wiring and they come with instructions that explain step by step how to do the install. Here's a few links that will help you out there
