ignition switch replacement
well, for some reason, my key falls out of the ignition switch no matter what position it is in. this requires me to pull the key out after i start the bike. otherwise, it falls out while im driving.
this is the ignition switch located under the right side of the seat, above the oil tank on an xlh..
so does anyone know where i can get one??i couldnt find it on jpcycles..

hey pinion. in responce to the messageon the other thread, i was looking at this switch at jpcycles:

it doesnt give any dimensions which worries me, but it is a 3 way switch as is mine.. off, on, and lights..
it is only 13 bucks, and i could just add it to my pile of things that need to be returned to jpcycles for various reasons.. [sm=headbang.gif]

HEY pinion.. regarding the location of the key, im 90% sure its stock. the wires on the back all look like they were there since factory.. also, ive seen a few similar xlh's.. for example.. this pic:

You are so correct. I guess I have learned another new fact here. Ouch! It's starting to hurt.
The machine pictured is a 1971 XLH and the key is right where you say your 1969 is located. I went out to take a pic of the key on my 1971 XLCH, which is located on the left.
I see a large flat area on the right side of my frame where a switch would be located if mine were an XLH.
So it seems that a switch on an XLH was on the right side and the XLCH was on the left side. Trivia for sure, but it corrects my thoughts regarding the switch location and adds to my history of the old ironheads.
The J&P $13 switch will work on either side on yours. If you have the bracket on the right side then that is where it will easily mount. Now I am wondering if that bracket could be removed and moved to the left side?.......pg

Yes, I would have sworn that the switch was only on the left side until 69sport proved otherwise.
Question for you 74_ironhead.....Do you have a centermount oil tank or a side mount? If you have an XLH I bet the tank is a side mount. So far the only right side switches I have seen have all been on XLH models, all of which have side mount oil tanks. The side mount tank was used on a XLH because it has a much larger battery to run the electric starter, and that battery occupies the space where a center tank fits.......pg

OK. I guess there is no known reason why the switch went on one side or the other at this time. It must not have been an XLH/XLCH thing. Interesting.......pg

i have 2 hypothesis..
1. the year.
2.styling option packageon older xlh's. i know they came with 2 different tank types(one peanut, and one flatter wider one, as in the ebay bike above. i think on the xlch, you could only get the peanut style dressing, where the xlh you could get either the peanut stule, or the wider one, which also had the (option?) of hard saddle bags, and a different seat. im thinking that with this other seat/tank/etc., there was the option of a different key location.
ill take a look at the left side of my bike this week, and let you know about that area. i think, however, that i have a different bracket there.

in fact i found a pic.
you can see where my horn is normally located(its on a shelf in this pic) on the nut by the loose wire. but by my engine mount there is a bracket which originally held the cable/**** for the carb choke. which is where your horn is mounted pg. it looks as though that bracket is different on bikes with left side ign. switches...

thats funny. i think all 3 of us posting in this thread have old ironheads and dyna glide 100th anni editions(well, my dad has one anyways.)
