sporty shifting problems
i have a 1976 sportster liberty xlh1000 liberty edition. i inherited this bike at the beginning of the summer. the bike was functioning but as i fixed one problem another arose which ive been told is "fun" part of owning an older bike. my most recent problem seems to have me completely stumped. my mechanical skills are limited but i manage to get by with a good you tube video or forum advice. if its something i cant do my brother in law can do it. im having a problem with the transmission. if the motorcycle is running (in neutral) it doesnt go in gear. when i step on the gear selector it clicks as if it goes into gear however there is a clicking sound, similar to trying to put a manual transmission car into gear with out using the clutch. ive tried doing the clutch adjustment using the "clutch screw" and clutch cable. however this does not seem to work. if i put it into gear with bike off then start it there is now clicking however i cannot shift out of first. anyone have any ideas for me.

the unit could be loose from wear
you could have a broken selector spring in the shift mech
the shifter could be hitting the peg next to it and stopping it from going into gear all the way
you need 2 books - the factory parts and service books for that year bike - the aftermarket books are ok BUT

Factory parts catalog 99451-78B
Factory service manual 99484-78
Put the part numbers into the eBay, Google, etc or buy from local HD dealership, or best buy from a local indie motorcycle shop.
First is the clutch adjustment. We have to be certain that you are doing it correctly. It is different from any other motorcycle. There are 6 steps in the procedure, some with 2 or 3 parts. Need to do all, in correct sequence.
I'll post a link later. The i-net is very slow here tonight.
