I too am a refugee from a rice burner. Although it was/is a decent bike it still ain't a Harley! It was/is a Vulcan Classic 1500 so it was just enough to let me know that I really wanted a Harley after all. The XLS is also only my 2nd bike. Not bad for an old man who didn't start riding until after he turned 53, huh? I have a gut feeling that when it's road ready I'll have a helluva lot more fun on the HD. It has essentially been in storage for about 5 years hence it's going through a rebuild. The one item I'd like all of your input on is a gas cap. Does anyone know where I should look for one that has a fuel guage built into it?
Don't know about the gas gauge in the cap as I've never seen one on a Sporty. After all, "real bikes" have riders who know instinctively how much gas is left!
Welcome to the fold. I'm moving this to the Sporty section, and out of the Shovel section.
You can usually tell you're getting low on gas when you hear a noisy "echo" in the tank while riding. The engine noise/vibration will make the tank "ring" when it's low on gas.
Would anyone please be so kind as to give me a quick history on mny bike? How long was this model produced, what were/are it's pros and cons, etc.........
The '79 XLS is an oddball in the Sportster world. It was the first year for the XLS. There were a lot of parts used on those that will not fit the '80 & '81. If you look in most bike catalogs, there are parts that will only fit that year. Check out the Sportster Home Page for more history.
Call me crazy but here's another dumb question. Can anyone suggest a "store" where I can buy a crash guard for my bike? I don't mind falling down if it happens. It's the landing that hurts like hell. Plus I want to protect as much as possible on the bike anyhow.
Call me a wuss but, I'm trying to find a pair of new/used crash bars for my bike. Seems this critter I have is indeed a rare bird. Apparantly I haven't looked in the right place yet. Suggestions?
You could always have something custom made/fabricated if you are not able to find crash bars at a store.
My suggestion on the gas gauge is just unscrew the cap and look. I am not aware of any caps with gauges. Not a badidea though.
As far as the seat, are you looking for a soft or hard seat? I prefer a hard seat. When you first sit down, the seat seems really hard. But for riding it is awesome. LaPera made.
