Default fuel shut-off

Ok, in the manual it sez the fuel should be shut off when the motor is not running. I was wondering why? Does fuel enter the cyl and dilute and ruin the oil? Should you shut the petcock when ya run into the store? If ya stop for a cold one, or is it "when the motor isnt running" as the manual sez. I dont worry about my 2 strokes, they never have any fuel left in em when my son puts em up lol. thanks Dusty

Nah, they say that only because, should the the float needle hang up in the carb, it would dump the fuel on the floor through the overflow on the float chamber. The chance of this happening is slim, but it is a good practice to use though.
I shut off my Dyna's fuel valve every night, just out of habit I suppose. Same for the Sporty.........pg

I have had my early '76 XLCH pump out half a tank of gas when the valve was left open one hot summer day. What happens is that the gas in the floatbowl heats up and expands, and some is forced up the main jet into the carb body. This evaporates, cooling the carb. The cooled gas in the floatbowl contracts, the float valve opens to refill the bowl and the cycle starts all over again.

i know there is a warning in the s&s manual about what the original poster stated.. that if the carb leaked, it would run into the cylinders, eventually soak past the rings, and end up in the oil.. not a good situation.

i imagine that wouldnt happen in the time it takes to run into a store. ... but overnight, i think id shut it off.
