Default Ode to a 66.

Hello. I'm very new to this forum. Been around HD's most of my life. never owned one until now. I came across a 1966 XLCH Ironhead 900 on of all places FB. did some talking to the guy there ask questions and went to see it. I looked it over, and found it to look in good shape for the year but could not shake the feeling that some of the parts were off. Anyway i ended up buying it and altough not a harley also bought a 1962 triumph. The owner didn't know much about the 900 other then the magneto cap was missing and there was no key.
So this places me to today. Further inspection of the bike shows that whoever owned it just threw parts on including plugs that well need to be replaced with the correct ones. I have the original riders handbook, and service manual now so with those I see I really need some expert advise!
Original Carb is gone. in its place is a S&S Super B carb that's simply HUGE and the magneto is original but without serial number plate, so gonna be rough getting parts I'm guessing. Serivce manual that came with it is for late 70"s Sportsters and not much help so i did get the the right one specific for a 66.
So here's where I am. Can I use this carb on this year or is there one, I should purchase?
Magneto. without the plate serial numbers can this be rebuilt or again should I purchase a newer model and if so what type?
Any assistance would be taken serious and followed through with.

Well you bought a Chopper, so all bets are off as to what should or should not be on the bike. Good news, cool looking bike. After that it is going to take time and some give and take to work some stuff out. pics are always good, maybe through up a shot of the magneto and someone will know something. Good luck

Winter1966, nice project you have there.

Re: the carb, set up right the B-carb will run fine. Back in the 70s we would run the Mikuni

Re: the magneto. Maybe post a pic and see if somoen/anyone can identiofy it?

And I defintiely those days when I stored my bikes in the living room.

Super B is fine for it if setup properly. How do you "know" the plugs for it were wrong? What was "wrong" with them? Buying a chopper like than can have a bunch of things done, headwork etc that would warrant different plugs. FYI, AMF bought Harley in 69, add it to the list as not original!

That is an awesome '66 chopper. Here is a good FaceBook page especially for pre-1970s IronHeads...
