72 XLCH how to tell if on right stroke when kickstarting
I have been practicing kickstarting my XLCH. It has an working e-start but I like to kickstart it.
Usually, I feel for the firm spot on the pedal and kick it. Once in a while I get a kickback. How do I tell what is the right stroke?
The right stroke is slowly kicking it till the is resistance is felt, just like yer doing. F, R doesn't matter. Then give it all ya got. Kickback is normal. That depends on too much fuel (primed too much) or if the ignition is just a little too advanced. My old 72 CH would start in 2 kicks cold and 1 kick hot.
Got a 77 XLH with kick & E start. I'm 71 and really enjoy the E start now.
Nice bike, That is close to what I want mine to look like when I am finished. Ok. I hjave only been kicking it when it is warm. Using the e-start when it is cold.
On a 4 stroke dirt bike you kick slowly til you get resistance, then push a 'little' past top dead...reset the kicker,THEN give her a full revolution.Should work the same for you.
