Default Noob exhaust question

Alright, I just acquired this 74 ridged ironhead in a trade. I have never had or messed with a ridged frame before. Bike is pretty much ready to ride minus the exhaust. The rear pipe has nothing to mount to aside from the motor and the kicker hits the front pipe when starting it. What do I need to do to mount this exhaust? Or is this somehow not the right exhaust for this frame?

It would seem a good bet to find a custom pipe maker and get the best fit possible. Check with engine companies on a good length to get good performance from them.

I see the front pipe attached at the cylinder head as usual - is the exit end attached to the frame? You could "simply" manufacture a figure-8 clamp, one end to the frame the other end to the pipe.

I don't see a pic of the rear pipe, but I would think that it could be attached in a similar way.

You could mock them up using metal strapping...

The front pipe is attached to the frame by a 8 or 9 inch bar that mounts to the frame and other end to the exhaust. The rear pipe sort of vears away from the bike towards the end of the pipe. The end sits probably 5-6 inches from the frame.

I see there is a mounting block attached to the front pipe and then to the bar that is attached to the frame. Perhaps a muffler shop that does pipe bending could twist that rear pipe until the mounting block attached to the pipe is right beside the frame.

Nice looking bike.

You are in the world of full custom, no one is going to have something that just "fits" you application.

As suggested, a good muffler shop might be able to bend what you have to work, but your are likely going to need to fab up an exhaust mount.

Be patient, it will be killer when done.

Take a look at the stock exhaust for an ironhead. the factory parts manual is a good place to start. Also, take a look at the Paucho muffler website. One of the components of the exhaust system is a big long heavy bracket that bolts to the frame. It has two mounting tabs on it that attach to the rear of both exhaust pipes using J clamps. You need to fabricate one of these brackets. You'll also need to probably weld a mounting bracket to the side of your frame. Then bolt it all up using the J clamps.

This is a design and fabricate issue. The only parts you'll be able to buy are the J clamps. Everything else will need to be whipped up. If you're not up to the task, take your bike to a custom motorcycle shop and they can do it for you. I'm lucky. I have one 10 minutes from me. For stuff like this, I make a drawing of what I want and they build it for me. DON"T take this to a Harley dealer.

I just went ahead and ordered a new Paughco exhaust. Problem solved.

I've got a set of Paughco mufflers to put on mine. I just haven't done it yet.
