Default Seating Issues

Hello Folks!

We're new to the Forum, and The New Owners, of An Old Bike!

She's a 75 Ironhead, andwe call her Frank...

Frank's a Blast, but she has a solo seat at the moment..

I'm not a seat guru at all, and I'm in a bit of Hot water over Frank due to the lack of seating, and I swapped a 2 up Honda for Frank, which has in turn kind of goofed up the relations at home, and I'd like to try and get things fixed up before it gets too cold, and I'm still out in the Dog House...

(Its not a terrible place in the world since Frank also resides there)

Frank has a rear fender off of a 94 Fatboy, and Fat Bob tanks as well...

I won't have any problems fabbing up a bracket, or two, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about where to start?

Would I or Could I go with a Fatboy rear seat? It has a Lepera solo up front, or do you think its possible to go with a modern Sporty seat, and it'd look Ok?

There's roughly 24-1/2" from the front bracket to the rear mounting hole on the fender, following the contour of the frame and fender..

I've also got to tinker with the shocks.. She's wearing Progressives that look awesome, I believe they are 412's but the springs are way too soft.. I lose 3" height just with me.. (Franks last owner was really short on one end)

Hey Thanks for any Input in Advance!

Terry

Default RE: Seating Issues

It would take a bit of work to fit a newer seat, but it can be done. The original '75 seat is attached by a pin in front (replaced by a bolt on most bikes) and a bolt through the rear fender into the seatpan under the pasenger section. Newer seats have a tab at the rear to bolt to the fender, requiring a new hole. At the front, they have a tab that fits into a slot built into the frame. This might be able to fit under the original mounting pin if you grind the tab a little to make it narrow enough. Some seats might have a tab that is too narrow. In that case, you'd need to add some filler blocks because you definately don't want the seat shifting around under you.

At the worst, you might have to get some welding done on the frame to fit a slot that will mate up with the seat tab.

Hey Thanks a Bunch For The Info!

At the worst case scenario I'm considering grabbing one of those suction cup pillions, and when its down for the snowfall here, maybe experimenting a bit to see what we can do..

I'd like to have something at least half way comfy back there... Our average ride is around 50 miles or so...

Take care,

Terry
