Default Torque

I have two oficial factory manuals one is 1979 to 1982 XLH / XLCH / XLS. The other is 1979 to 1985 XL / XR models. In the transmission section one says the torque for the main shaft nut is 135 to 155 f-lbs the other says 35 to 65 ft-lbs, so what is correct? Thanks.

The terminology is confusing and easy to get misinterpreted. There is the engine shaft and there is the transmission shaft and their respective sprockets, nuts, etc. The high number torque value is for the engine sprocket, the low number is for the transmission sprocket.

To compliment what IronMick just told you, that torgue value range on the transmission sprocket 35-65 ft lbs is much too high.

In my opinion, stay at the low range. 35 ft lbs on the transmission sprocket nut is plenty. 50-65 ft lbs and you'll be stripping that narrow nut.

Thanks for the replies. But the high specs are clearly under the transmission specs section in the 1979 to 82 book misprint maybe? Thanks

Mis-print ? Error ? Take your pick.

What I'm trying to tell you is:
  • what you're reading in that manual is just plain "wrong".
  • torque the transmission mainshaft sprocket nut to 135-155 ft lbs and it will strip somewhere around 50 ft lbs.
  • in my opinion, 35 ft lbs is about right.
  • as always, your mileage may vary.

How you proceed is up to you. Choose wisely.

While the original nut was heat treated and only 4 threads that can be counted on - we put a drop or red loc tite and 60 pounds on it and call it a day

Yeah I thought that was too much for a threaded splined shaft , I was just curious about it and wanted to know others opinions. What I did was to lightly rattle it on with an impact.
