Default Starter install -- remove clutch mechanism?

When installing a new starter on an 81 sporty -- do I have to do anything to clutch release mechanism to remove the primary cover?

If I am reading the Haynes manual correctly they say to leave the cable on. So loosen primary chain and unbolt then install starter and reverse order?

Stick Man- If you can wait till tonight ( Have a real busy day today )I can give you the procedure from the original shop manual. I have an '82 but the manual covers your year. I recently replaced the clutch cable and clutch actuator for lack of the correct name - don't remember until I refresh with the manual and what has to be done with the starter install. Let me know

Had the time to look in the shop manual:
1-Loosen the primary chain adjuster ONLY to remove the primary cover.
2-Remove the clutch adjustment access plug and drain the oil.
3-Remove the cover without changing the clutch cable adjustment. The cover can now be removed with the clutch cable, clutch ramp adjuster assembly( should stay attached to the cover) , exposing the bolts for the starter motor.
4- I would really consider, when putting everything back together, replacing the clutch cable and ramp adjuster assembly.
5- Make sure the ramp assembly is assembled correctly on install with the correct preliminary adjustment.
6- Spend most of your Saturday cleaning the cover ,making sure the gasket surfaces are perfect, then adjusting the primary chain, clutch cable and clutch .
7- My primary chain adjustment bolt leaked so I backed away the lock nut after final adjustment, put a perfect bead of silicone on the washer and nut and tightened back up- no more leak.
8- Make sure you replace the correct type and amount of oil and replace the plugs.
9- I'm sure someone will jump in if I left anything out.
10- Happy motoring!

Thanks man!

So just like I suspected you do NOT have to do anything with the ramp? And the cable and the ramp can pretty much stay in place when just removing the cover for starter replacement. It is probably not as much of a big deal as I think. A few years ago the ramp thing was broken, and I had to bring it to a shop because I could not rebuild it properly and close the cover. It turns out the new clutch ramp I bought was a Taiwan POS that did not fit; as the mechanic had to order yet another one. so it was not really my mechanical skills that were at fault.

In any case -- I am going to try to rebuild the solenoid with it in the bike, As I already have everything off on the right side and the kit is only 18 bucks on amazon while a new starter is like crazy expensive. i am assuming the 100 dollar ebay ones are more tawain garbage. Anyway, thank for the reply!!!
