Nothing sounds as Good as an Iron Engine..with Drags.. But there is Not a worser Exhaust for performance for your Harley!!
Most Very Tired Ironheads, get away with Cheap exhaust, because they aint got no *** anyway!!
so, Check your Intake Seals (manifold) those clamps shown are for O-Ring....
that should be a Welch plug where someone decided Caulk would work...or RTV .
But, I doubt that is your Underlying problem..Get yerself some real Exhausts.
finally.. the Bendix is Known for gas out the overflow...mostly because Most haven't a Clue how to mount the Bowl Properly..
I will say...If you do Not know the proper use/orientation of the Float spring...leave the damn thing out and set the float a bit Lower!!
Finally...our Basically Stock Ironhead Dragbike..back in Late '80's early '90's...would Not get down the Track nearly as well with the accelerator Pump in play...ended up simply shredding the "leather" pumper end, so it was Non Functional..(needed to all be in place to be Stock) and proceeded to Kick some butt in that class....YMMV
Tinkered with the bike more this weekend. Rebuilt carb with oe kit. Fabbed up some lollipops and put in the pipes. This is temporary until we settle on some exhaust. Installed fender & seat to yard (or field) drive it. It seems to run really good. No popping or stalling. I set the idle at about 950 rpm. Generator is working properly.
It will be a while before we put it on the road. Will be reinstalling front brakes, cleaning up some wiring, addressing an oil leak, and replacing tires.
Glad to hear she's coming together!
One often overlooked maintenance item is the spark advance unit, those need to be clean and lubed once in a while.
Once you get her out on the road remember these bikes do not like being pushed too many RPMs, I'd recommend keeping it under 4000.
Have you got a factory service manual yet? You'll be needing to learn adjusting the valves since these motors have solid lifter cams.
Thanks for the info. I will definitely check this out. I believe all of that to be new (when he built engine) because it looks new and there is an old one in the parts boxes. I may end up having to buy a service manual. The PO said he has 2, a hd and a clymer. He is on the search. Im kinda holding out for him to find them.

Yep ... Good advice ... Seen more a few of these advance units go south ... Sieze up ... A lot off Chineseium junk out there ... Good luck with your project
There was a guy selling genuine HD parts and service manuals on ebay on a CD for not too much money some time back. I would get one of those whether you get the one from the PO or not.
