i saw a post for mid 70's plugs.. but none for the older bikes. right now im using accel 166 plugs, but i cant find those anywhere. what models are reccomended?
The plug range you can use goes from a HD #2 through a HD #5. The #4 is what is recommended to use for normal service.
Low numbers are the warmest plugs and the higher numbers are colder. (That applies to Harley plugs, other brands may differ in range designation)
If you don't want to go buy a Harley plug #4, then just get yourself a set of Champion H8C plugs at your local auto parts. These are what I run and are the equivalent to a H4 plug from Harley.
If your bike burns any oil then you will want to get 1 range warmer Champion plug. Ask your auto parts guy what that number will be........pg
got 4 hc8's from jp cycles with an order.. thanks guys.
now i just gotta figure out how to retune the carb.. it was running great when i picked it up out of the shop, now its running real rough. im so clueless with carbs too. black smoke means rich correct? my ears are going deaf from backfires.
also, are exhaust gaskets required for ironheads? i cant find them in jp cycles.. only for shovels and evo's. when the bike backfires, the extra pressure seems to force exhaust out of the pipes where they meet up with the heads.
No gaskets required. Yes a backfire is an explosition, so it is reasonable to expect the pipes to blow outward. Make sure you have no air leaks at the inlet manifold.....pg
well it had been running fine. great actually. then last friday i took it out and it ran fine, but when i gave it gas it would bog down. so i re-adjusted the accelerator pump(its an s&s) and it ran great again. now, just recently, when i start it, it runs fine, but as soon as i turn of the enrichener(choke?) it almost dies. if i leave on the enrichener it runs well for a while, but then starts to die. if i give it gas, it pops and backfires like mad. i have no carberator knowledge, and no way to tell if its running rich or lean. i know what ***** do what, but i dont know when to turn them.
at this point im thinking of taking it back to the shop. also my tachometer is shot so i cant adjust the idle speed to well.
Please check also that filter in your petcock is clean and fuel is running freely from fuelline, S&S E is easy to adjust instuctions can be found here
yeah, see, i know by heart what every adjustment on the carb means, but it also assumes that i know what a lean and rich bike sounds like. which i dont. i didnt grow up around cars, and this is the first carb ive ever touched. plus, the first step says..
1. Start bike, bring to operating temperature. Close enrichener as quickly as possible.
i can never close the enrichener. i let it warm up till the oil tank iseven hot. if i close the enrichener,it just dies. so its a bit hard to get it past this point.
also, i should mention that when it seems to start to backfire and carry on, that its missing on one of the cylanders. i have new plugs and wires on the way to try and eliminate that possibility.
now that this thread has completely changed topics....
ok, ive been thinking about it.. and might have a solution for when i get home.. since the bike will only operate with the enrichener on.. and the enrichener makes the a/f ratio richer, then i can assume that i need to make the idle mix richer in order to keep it idling..
possibly what has been throwing me off, is that when i add some throttle with the enrichener on, the accelerater pump and the enrichener in comination results ina super enriched situation, which is what is fouling up my plugs and causing the cylinder to miss.
