Im in process of rebuilding a 1965 900 XLH. It was a total basket case and im making headway however many small parts are not on this bike so Im guess at what some things are. And of course with the help of a service manual and parts book it has been good. There are however a few things i cant find in the books. Namely on the right lower crankcase beneath the sproket cover there is a large hole that looks as if it should have either a drain plug or a line hooked to it. Anyone know which? Also same side uper crankcase near the oil tank there are three places where a line or something should attach. I must assume one is the outlet of the oil tank into the crank case but what are the other two?
This is my first Harley and its been a labour of love but i have noticed not many of these old bikes are mention, or sold online. Are they not around anymore or not worth the effort? I can't even find reference to the lower ends in many parts catalogues as well, hence the reason for the above questions. No schematics or photos or anything. This old skoot has the look i want, the vintage "old school" hard as nails and rides the same man's man's bike.
Check out the JockeyJournal dot com for TONS of info on older bikes - lots of gys over there will be alot of help with the ironhead project.. Doubt you'll get much help around here for older bikes - HOWEVER - there are a few old scooter tramps here too.
I sent you a PM. There is another forum I used to post on before I became a member on this site. I didnt want to post a lnk to it from here. It seems like that would be disrespectful to the admin on this site.
I just stumbled across your post.
Is the hole you are referring to going into the transmission at the front right side of the tranny. If so, this is for the speedometer drive to screw into.
The holes in the right side of the crankcase are:
Top connection, right behind the rear cylinder base----
This is the oil return line to the oil tank
Middle connection---This is located midway up the case in front of the countershaft sprocket. This connection is the oil pump vent line. It should have a 1/4 inch brass elbow screwed into the hole with the open end facing straight up. This goes to the oil tank.
The bottom connection--- is located in the backside of the oil pump, rather than the actual crankcase. This is the oil feed to the pump. This line comes from the bottom of the oil tank.
I am a little confused about you saying you cannot find any help or information about your old ironhead.
You have apparently have not spent much time looking at this site. There is more infomation here than you will ever find in any book.
