pitbull1... 'the books show an inner and outer spring..mine only has one big spring in the clutch..j and p shows an inner and outer' You only have 1 spring? There should be two. An inner and an outer. I can only guess someone had this apart before you and did not replace both springs? And like I say, I am only guessing. 'also..What gives wonder.my steels are also cupped and scarred.. ' Are you saying that your steel plates are cupped and scarred? If so, they must look a little blue as well. Here again, I have to take a guess from your description, but it is possible that someone left out the 2nd spring. This would result in a lot less pressure being available to engage the clutch. This would mean the clutch would likely slip and that causes extreme heat to build up and will warp the steel plates.
If all of this describes the condition of the plates I am afraid you need to buy a new set of steel plates and the needed spring to get your clutch in order. You will have to determine which spring you need, inner or outer? J&P can help you determine this by you measuring the one you have.
I can only guess (again) that maybe someone left out the other spring because they wanted a softer pull on the clutch lever. If that was the case, I call it a very dumb move..........pg
thanks pinion.I had a good look at those steels. They are terrible.some are actually cupped..I'm thinking that it was an aftermarket heavy duty clutchspring of some sort..Very thick and stiff. My clutch was harder thanmost I have pulled.Tuff in stop and go traffic.Would make my hand cramp sometimes. But it's gone now.lol.And I got a monster grip in my left hand from it.lol..I just ordered new barnett steels, clutch springs and comp parts from jand p.I'm hoping my clutch is much better after. Before you couldn't even put it in gear at a stop when it was cold..I was getting to where I had to push it down the drive hill then pull the clutch and drop it into first when I first started it in the mornings. If I wasn't rolling it would try to run out from under me or either go dead.Absolutely no disengagement at all till it warmed up.
Good to hear you have the parts on order and are putting it back to original condition (with the fine Barrnett plates added in). I think you will like the clutch set up better that what you have been dealing with............pg
