Gee, Fxxxflhrci, I'd like to know who is building your motors. I had a shop for several years, and haven't seen many Sportsters go 100,000 miles on a bottom end rebuild.

That said, listen to Dusty--"if it's not broke, don't try to fix it." You can get a pretty good idea of the shape your bottom end is in by removing the cylinders checking the play (up-and-down is bad, some side-to-side OK) in the connecting rods. If they're nice and tight, just do just do the top end and leave the bottom end for another day.

Pakrat,

Im running the original Carb on mine, the Bendix / Zenith, I did have it rebuilt and it runs like a top...I've heard all kinds of stuff about other carbs, good and bad. I guess that from my perspective this bike is 30 years old, its a numbers matching bike and it runs good. I dont want to molest it any more than I have to, to keep it running well. I dont mind getting a new set of trany gears or re-doing the valves or that kind of thing but the carb, the motor, the frame, its gonna stay as original as I can keep it as long as it runs... But that's just me.

Sorry, It took so long for me to reply, I was ran over at a red light Sunday morning on my 07 Heritage. I was just sitting there with no traffic on the road to speak of when a car pulled out on the road behind me gunning his engine at hit me doing about 40mph. Well you can imagine waht happened. I think I landed on his car before I hit the pavement. He keep going (Hit and Run) . Sure glad just to be alive. I spent the night at the emergency room with my wife and son. Boy those road burns hurt like the dickens! Guess once I get to feeling up to it while there repairing my Heritage I can work on my Sportster. I had it running great with a Zenith carb I bought of Ebay. I was going around a corner and it downshifted by it self into 1st gear, made one heck of a racket so i shut it down. I pulled the primary cover off and noticed the clutch bushing came off. Mine is a 77 xlh. I put it back togather and I still have a problem . I think it may be in the tranny or shifter linkage.
Harley Davidson will be doing the repair on my heritage It is going to take a new frame. They said it could be as long as 45 days before I get it back. I was really looking forward to riding to the Galveston Ralley but it will not be ready by then. I was wearing my helmit when I was hit .I wore my lid maybe 80 percent of the time.Thereare gouges and marks on it that could have been my skull. I have been riding for 11 years without ant kind of accident. I never figured on being run down like that. Sure makes me wonder if it was a stolen car or what was up with the whole ordeal. Anyway I am glad I am able to sit here today and write you this reply.

No I didnt, they wanted way to much money and the numbers on the frame where butchered and the motor numbers nowhere near matched what I could read on the frame. Left em my number an told them if they wanted to sell for about 300 give me a call but 1800 was too much for a smoking mis numbered Ol bike. I think it could be a parts thing but not too much for my fits all models cept 79. But around where I live there are always deals if you look for em.....I just passed on a 79flh after I talked to the previous owner and his mechanic but it prob was worth the 4500 they wanted thanks and i hope ya get it runnin right soon, and the other fixed and the rash all cleared up.... Sometimes its best not to stop for them lights lol Dusty
