Was at the Harley Shop ( not dealer) and was asking about the carburator on my 84 ironhead.
The guy said, its like this Kevin............buy an S&S carb and your problems are over as far as carburators go.........
What is everyones take on this? my bike has a Keihin carb on it ( Non CV ).
I just dont know so im looking for advice, also is the Keihin Non CV the factory carb?
Thanks
Kevin
Yes, that's the stock carb. I have one on my '83 and have had absolutely no problems with it. If yours is OK, I'd leave well enough alone. If you need a new carb, the S&S is a proven performer but it will cost close to $400 for a new one with everything you need. I've heard that the CV Keihins are a good replacement, too.Used ones are pretty cheap, but you will have to adapt it to your manifold andget a new air cleaner to fit it.
i have found that one of the cheapest replacment and a top preformers is the old VM mikuni 38 mm with a primary bleed needle the ones on two stroke dirt bikes and snowmobiles you well have to get a manifold adapter but they are easy to get for around $20
I have the cv carb on my 79 xls, works great, runs good, stays adjusted ( a little rich at idle) cheap and an easy adaption. Only draw back for me was the size.... it stuck out to far... I then replaced the fuel tank to a larger size (I had the sporty 2.2 gal tank) for apperance and distance (lol). It still sticks out too far for the highway pegs but I can live with that for a savings of over 250 from the S&S shorty carb. Also had to change the AC and make a bracket to support the carb and AC cover. Good Luck Dusty
I have had Zero "0" problems with my S&S "E" on my 89 FLHover 90,000 miles and 17 years and I have not even had the float bowl off it. I have a "B" on my old panhead I've had to rebush the throttle shaft and replace the float. (over 25 yrs, and about 130,000 miles) me thinks S&S carbs. are worth every penny.
I have installed S&S carbs on several bikes and run them for years. The only carb that has given me less trouble was a Linkert, but Linkerts have so few parts that not much can go wrong and you don't get much performance with them either..
