I have a 99 XL1200C with the stock mikuni carb and I was told that the carb farts that Im getting is because of the slide getting worn. Since Im not real impressed with Mikuni carbs, I was wondering what would be a good carb to put on the Sporty.
Could someone please recommend a good carb and breather set up? I was told Holley's are good carbs for Harley but I was also told that the Holley carbs would burn out the rings. Is any of this true?
If it's stock it's Keihin and they are fart machines. And if you have mikuni and it's not smooth, it's not tuned right. the Mikuni HSR 42 is a great carb and probably the smoothest available for harleys.
And in general, any carb and brand that's tuned right won't burn out your rings, a carb simply mixes fuel and air, and will only burn the rings if you run really lean.......in which case, overheating is what will cause damage.
yeah like xxxflhrci said, a properly tuned keihin will run great as well. Although the biggest drawback of the keihin is the accelerator pump, its not adjustable which is a main cause for off idle hesitation especially if you roll the throttle slowly. Although there are a bunch of common mods for the keihin which you can read about, which include drilling the slide, replacing jets, tubes, needles which can improve it's performance. Also depending on how bad the carb farts are, and how finicky you are about it, it may be something as simple as jetting to cure your problem, I wouldn't suspect a worn slide. I would only suspect a worn slide if you've been running without an aircleaner, otherwise that carb isn't that old and really has no reason that it'd be worn, so take it apart and inspect if your worried about it. On the other hand, mikuni's tend to be almost perfect right out of the box, just fine tuning needed, and like I said will have a much smoother responce over a keihin.
