Default RE: 1979 IH

I'll be getting my book here in a week or so. I am going to be putting together another guys 79 IH motor for a custom he built so I will work my bugs out there. So far as the charging system is concerned I thought the 79's had a permanent magnet system and not an excited field. I see ironhead77 mentioned flashing the field. Please tell me the thing is a permanent magnet. I have been kicking around the idea of putting in a CDI magneto and dropping the battery but to do so I will have to install a kickstart. I would imagine no problem here since the earlier IH were Kickstarted and used magneto systems. Anybody heard if major problems encountered doing this? Were they high tension, lowtension or energy transfer magneto systems? If I don't see any major problems then the charging system will wind up a nice ornament on the wall and I'll install a rectifier for the lights. I will be stripping ALL wiring out of mine and the build i'm doing so no worries with factory wiring and relays. Once again I appreciate all the info and even though I don't reply everyday I am interested in what you have to say.

Default RE: 1979 IH

manual calls for "flashing the field" and I think there are some previous Q&A on bringing the IH back to magneto and installing a kicker, I'd like to have a kicker but I think I'll get my hands on an older biker IH or even a Shovel.... passed on a few good ones this year but I'm still looking GL Dusty
