Well, the front brake switch is inside the handlebar switch housing, and has a "button" that sticks out behind the brake lever pivot. If the switch housing and lever perch aren't installed correctly, the switch won't work right - it will either be on or off all the time.

The rear brake switch is an in-line hydraulic switch, and is located on the brake line, under the battery box, at the rear of the primary. Other than tapping on it if it's stuck, the only fix is to replace it.

thanks worked it was the front brakes thanks alot got ur up and on the road now even though I got a dead battery from the shop i bought it out i got to hitt the starter twice then it was dead so I hooked it up to the car and jumped it and took it for a 30 min ride after getting the idle tuned it only smokes alittle when started out of rear exhaust and the exhaust port area but isnt really dark just light colored. Runs great but got to find out whats with the S&S carb it pulls untill 2500 then spitts and coughs and wont rev higher in all the gears so thats really all I got to get running untill I can start restoring it To new looking except for carb and I just switch out the new black bars they have on the nightster. I found a few dealer with the original slip ons hopefully they will make me a good deal on the obsulute slipons or I will just find some look alikes. Once again thanks for all your help 83

Chances are you either need a bigger main jet in the carb or you have a fuel flow problem.
