CV carb with an adapter will work great and cost less.
I just happen to have one for sale

Do you have the manifold flange adapter for Ironheads? If so I might be interested in purchasing yours.

Sorry I don't...I think they're about $35 if memory serves.
Go to XL forums and you'll get a wealth of Sporty info there.

They are that good? Well I will have to see if I can't find a used CV carb kit somewhere and try it for myself. What kind of gas mileage have you all been getting with the CV? My S&S got me 35MPG in city, 59MPG on interstate. The new Bendix I got has increased my city up to 42MPG but I have not tested the freeway mileage yet.

After trying many, many carbs on my Sporty, I came to the conclusion that the S&S Super E is the best overall for great performance, easy tuning, and reliability. You can get them on ebay pretty cheap. That's my opinion, anyway. They have a simple, time-tested design. I suppose that's why 99% of drag bikes use them. I don't worry about gas mileage. It's a motorcycle, for crying out loud! Anything is better on gas than my truck, so I don't worry about a few mpg here or there! LOL!

The entire reason I started riding is to use the least amount of gas and really stick it to those Arab oil sheiks who are funding those terrorist sons of b*T*h's, and do it on an American vehicle. Sure I could be riding a Virago or something that gets killer gas mileage but how Patriotic is that? I want to prove that you can get killer effeciency out of a good old AMERICAN motorcycle. How many of you all do over 100 mph on your Harleys?. I don't so why do I have to guzzle fuel as if I were. I have modified my AMERICAN 1995 Firebird Formula with the LT1 Corvette engine to out run many cars on the road and still get 32 MPG on the highway. It was orginally rated at 26MPG. For a comparison, the V-6 Firebird gets 29MPG highway. I have yet to see another V8 that can go as fast while getting the same highway mileage as my LT1 Formula. So you can have your cake and eat it too. If I can get that kind of mileage out of a V8, why not a V2? We just have to figure out how to do it on a Harley. If I can figure out how to propel a 3500lb vehicle 32 miles on 1 gallon of gas. We should be able to propel a 600lb bike 3-4 times as far.

I agree! My Dyna (using an S&S) gets about 35 city/43 hwy, and will still get to 100 mph quicker than a stage 2 Twin Cam. I even kept up with a rice rocket one day last summer on an empty portion of the interstate... Top speed was on the track was just under 140 mph. Of course, top speed is mainly dependent on gearing. It's how quick you get there that really shows what your engine can do. The older sportys aren't usually as good on gas because of their design. Still, 35 mpg average is pretty darn good. Your riding style has a lot to do with it, too. I ride my bikes pretty hard, which is why I don't expect to get really great mileage.

Well I hope to break 60MPG HWY soon. I really don't measure my results on the city mpg because there are too many varibles to account for. For my highway test. I simply do the speed limit for over 100 miles and compute my results based on that.

And you are absolutely correct on the rideing style. If I were to drag race my bike from stop light to stop light all the time, my gas mileage would only be 30MPG. When I goose my firebird from stoplight to stoplight, my mileage goes down to 15mpg from over 30mpg on the highway.

I've been reading all the posts on the cv carb upgrade and feel i need to put in my2cs.I have done the cv thing on my 72 ironhead.I bought the carb off ebay for 85.00. Got an adapter off ebay for 35.00. Now the rest of thestory. It takes more than just bolting it on.If you do, it won't run for crap,it will pop and sputter and you'll wonder what is going on.First you'll need to change the meter rod to one for a 1200(unless the carb came off a 1200).You're also gonna need some slow jets sized from a 46 to 50.The air screw is gonna need to be turned all the way in then back out about 1 and1/2 to 2 turns. Also gonna need to figure out some way to work the enrichener.Either with a stock style (cv)cable or some kind of custom setup. When I did this swap on my bike it took me about an afternoon. But Ive been wrenchin and pounding on stuff my entire life. The reason for all the jets is to fine tune the carb to your bike.(I'm using a 50 jet).Start small and work your way up.The air screw may need a little adjusting to. Now let me tell you about the benefits.Starts on 3rd kick or less evry time, has twice the tourqe it had.As far as gas mileage,I've never checked it.Actually I can't I don't have a speedo. If you're worried about mileage or more mileage maybe consider a newer machine. All in all this is a great way to improve the performance of your ironhead. Good luck.

I used the stock bendix for awhile on my bike. Was pretty happy with it, but I went up to the local bike shop and picked up a super e with a hypercharger air cleaner and omg that thing would scream! BUT it wasn't just a bolt on like harleyguy2064 said. It took FOREVER to get the da*n thing tuned. I listened to just about everyone and there brother on the sizes of jets I should use. I finally stuck with some and went with a 66 and 265 (I'm not absolutely positive on those numbers, I bought them last summer and went through soo many). I also had to buy an S&S Intake Manifold, carb, adaptor for the hypercharger, hypercharger, and I had to fab a bracket to keep everything from just fallin over. Long story short...the super e is pretty bad a*s, but I don't know about mpg, cause I also dont have a speedo.

I have a buddy that swears by mikuni though. So...I think its all about personal preference.
