Default Muffler Pipes

I bought some Cycle Shack muffler pipes for my XLS this past September. I'm not very impressed with them - right off, the chrome developed these tiny bubbles and blisters down the pipe along the seam. The chrome has also flaked off a bit here and there around the tip of the pipe. I wasn't too concerned about either; it's an old bike, but now there is a CRACK along the seam where it curves just before the muffler.
I just found the receipt last night; do you think I'll have much luck getting HD to exchange or refund these pipes for me? Any tips?
I bought them mainly because my drag pipes looked so terrible (bracket broke and they came off the bike in SD). Now these "brand new" pipes look as shabby as those scraped up drag pipes....
Thanks,
D.

Most dealers of those parts usually have the fine print that reads: "once these pipes have been installed, they are not returnable". Where did you get them from?

I got them atAces & Eights HD in Mason, Ohio.... I wouldn't doubt they are not returnable, but dang, they ought to be, for as long as they held together. Three months lifespan?

I guess I should call and find out (or better yet, just show up with the cracked pipes). They seem like a stand-up bunch over there, and may be able to help me get some recourse from Cycle Shack.

Thanks,
D.

That sucks. Try totell your story toCycleshack too. I checked out their website and there's a pagewhere you cancontact them. It'd only take as long as it took to type your original post and the worst they can do is not reply. They may be interested for future research and development. They might even replace them too.

Thanks for the advice; I checked with Aces & Eights Harley Davidson in Mason, who refused to do anything about it. No problem - made my last purchase of anything from there.

I'm following up with Cycle Shack now. We'll see how that goes.

I was kind of surprised to see a V-Twin sticker on the box the pipes came in. I thought Cycle Shack made their own pipes.

Aces & Eights bought them from V Twin. V Twin bought from Cycle Shack. They don't make much of what they sell. Nobody takes pipes back. Sorry you got screwed. Get used to it, it ain't cheap to ride.

Thanks for that! I think you saw this coming before I did...

After a month of email back and forth with Cycle Shack (how did they break, did you mount them right, take a picture...), they finally said "box them up and send them back and we'll take a look."

A couple more weeks go by, and I get another email "since you didn't use the included bracket, all we can do is offer you a new set for $120." Well, their bracket didn't reach the mounting bolts on the pipes! I explained that to them ahead of time. So I used the one already on the bike. I'm really not leaning toward paying another $120 for pipes that broke the first time.

What would you all do? I can try this again and use their bracket (of course, I'll have to wail on it with a hammer to make it fit, which may very well lead to the pipes breaking AGAIN.) I sent them the pipes, so I don't even have the old pipes now to try and weld up the cracks.

I put my old open pipes back on the bike and it's running fine. I'd like to tell them to sht-can their POS pipes and forget about it :^)

So - what has everyone else put on their '79 XLS? It's an odd year, but I'd love to go anywhere else to get a decent set of pipes...

Thanks,
D.
