Hello all!!! I am new to the forum. I just purchased a 76 IronHead (my first HD) and have a question for whoever can help. I will try to putsomepics on here so you can see my new 600.00 purchase and help me with the rebuild. Iwould liketo know what kind, size and where a good place to buy a Carb and intake. The engine will turn over by hand, but I never have started it because no carb no exhaust and a very bad wiring job. So for now I would like to buy a carb and exhaust to start or attempt to start it to see if it needs engine help. The motor is a 77 1000cc I believe and I dont know if there have been any internal modifications aka bored or stroked. Thanks.
You have the "o-ring" style intake manifold. Sportsters thru late 1978 had this type before HD switched to the "rubber band" style. If you're on a budget, I'd suggest looking on eBay for a stock carb and manifold from the mid to late 70's. The carb will be a Keihen. If you can't find a carb and manifold together, HD used similar butterfly Keihens on Sportsters thru 1987, so a newer one would work as long as you buy an old-style o-ring mainfold.
If you want new and don't mind spending almost as much as you paid for the bike, an S&S kit is a good choice.
J&P Cycles sells an adapter kit to change the O-ring style to the better sealing band style. You can get the intake manifold to change it from them also. Then you just have to dig up a carb. There should be lots of the Keihin butterfly carbs around as most were swapped out for the easier to tune S&S carbs.
I just put the S&S super E on my Ironhead and took off a mikuni carb and manifold. If you're interested, all the mikuni needs is a needle and seat valve and possibly a float. the whole setup is yours for a Benjamin plus whatever it costs to ship it.
I have a 77 ironhead with the originalkeihin carb. and I believe it's worn out. Like you I have searched for a replacement and could not find a keihin. I understand that the S&S carb. will stick out to the side farther than your original carb. I found a Elderbrock carb that will fit the 77 ironhead at elderbrock.com. Have you check this carb out? Has anyone else in the forum checked out an elderbrock?
Thx for the post. I have used elderbrock carbs on alot of vehicles I have owened and I always liked them. I think I might try one if the price is right. Thanks again.
