My XLX has an S&S shorty on it, and I was wondering how many of you guys deal with these S&S carbs. This thing seems to be a bit much for my stock 61 ci. with nothing more than drag pipes with 4" baffles that have been opened up some (by me for a lil sound!) The bike has 2" drag pipes on it also, which from my auto background seem like a big pipe, probably more so it would look cool.
Anyone got any good jetting advice for working with the S&S? or is there somewhere to find such info? I have the jetting guidelines from S&S but it still just seems like it runs fat a lot. Mostly seems to be a pain to make the accelerator pump do anything but **** fuel down the throat and give a little black puff out of both pipes!
Heres how I adjusted mine"
Accelerator pump-screw all the way in
Put in new plugs
go 30mph for 10miles
pull plugs check the color should be light tan
Above was for low speed, int. jet
put in new plugs
dont idle much at all
run 60mph for 10miles
Throttle chop- pull over
check plugs should be light tan
Above was for highspeed, main jet
Dark plugs-go smaller with jet
white plugs-go bigger
Once jetting is set
with bike warm idle screw lightly seated-back out 1 1/2 turns- run till it cuts out back in till cuts out- split the difference
good luck man i just did mine last week its fun but took a little time to set
C_hunter describes it pretty good. Here at 5000 ft, I run a .265 intermediate and .64 main jet .but my acc pump is only 1/2 turn out though. I run 1 3/4" open drags, the 2" are too big.
mathematically the 2" pipes are pretty much retarded. But nonetheless they are already on there and theres other stuff I want to spend on, so I put in a set of 4" baffles to try to make them less retarded. Just a temporary fix though.
Glad to hear others have their accelerator pumps set pretty low, mines ~5/8 of a turn out where it likes it best. I need to mess with my jetting though for sure, runs a bit rich all the time. Im 20 miles inland from daytona if that matters. When my fork seals show up so I can ride again, imma give that procedure a try and see where my settings are for now
Hey I just cheked my accel pump screw mine was out 9 turns out so brought it out 3/4 turns and runs alot better when i kick it alittle just got this sportster bobber and i need all the help to get info for this carb Might drop this off to get the carb set but you know what happens they don't take there time with it like we would

S&S recommends shutting off the accelerator pump when jetting/tuning your carb.....Too much fuel from the accelerator pump can cause "false" rich condition.....You did the right thing! Do like C_Hunter77 says and you will get it dialed in. Have fun!
