Default 76 Carb jets

I replaced my old keihin butterfly carb with a newer one tat looks just like but has a dual cable setup. My old carb had a 68 slow jet and could not read main. My new carb had a 52 and 165. The local HD dealer told my the factory setup was 42 and 160, which I think is wrong. I have tried the 52 ad 165, starts and idles Ok with the air screw out pretty far but pops going through the low end of the power band. Was think about trying the 68 do you think this is to big? What are others with this carb jetted? I have replaced points and timed engine, little help.

Hi, bryon857,

refit your "old" Keihin, it's much better than the later ones and infinitly adjustable!!! Main jet should be 165 to 185, iddle 1.00 on 76 to 79 ones, the single cable ones.

Thanks,
I thought 42 sounded a little small. When I took a part the old carb I pulled what I thought was a 68 but it could have been a 88, my eyes are not as young as they use to be.

Adjustment depends what other componets (exhaust, cams, cleaner, bore/cr ) you have on bike, but 60-70 intermedia jet and 165-175 main jet should be close with stock engine and baffled exhaust.Look for other topics how to adjust your carb.

I replaced the jet with 1.00, to big it runs good. If I tighten the air screw down the engine does not stall, it runs best with the air screw crack open a little bit. I am not sure how far back to go I am thinking 75 or 88. Any ideas?

Biggest intermedia jet for butterfly Keihin is 88. If engine don't stall when you turn mixture closed jet is too big or you have air leak somewhere. Mixture screw should be 1 ½ to 2 ½ turns open then intermedia jet is correct. Remember that engine MUST be correct operational temperature when you make adjustments.
