Default Eating up Starters

I have a 1973 Harley Ironhead and I have electric start on the thing. I recently bought a brand new starter and it worked fine for about two weeks and then it quit working, so I pulled it out and the splines were completely destroyed. I then noticed that the shaft that holds the gear that contacts the starter and the gear that contacts the fly wheel is bent which caused the splines on the starter to get trashed. It looks like I will have to pull the clutch and flywheel to get the shaft out to replace it. If anyone has any helpful hints to get the shaft out of the case without removing the clutch and flywheel I would appreciate it. Also I will be looking for that part so if anyone has ideas of where I might find that shaft, let me know. Ride Hard, Love Life! AC-
