Exclamation Recent starter issues, could use some input

Yesterday when I pressed my start button, The starter would engage then some grinding sound. I pressed it several times and it finally started.

Today; the same thing, It would grind then I could hear it just spin. I wound up push starting the darn thing so I could get to work. After work, I got on my bike and it just started right up.

I tried looking through You Tube videos, there didn't seem to be any for my 80 Sportster XLH or anything close.

Anyway. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

What exactly am I replacing? Starter drive shaft? Drive gear? Starter clutch? Looking at going to "All *****" for replacement parts.

After talking to my Indy, I'm going to make my own own tool to depress the clutch while I loosen the bolts on the clutch basket. I'm also going to try making my own video for Youtube to document what I'm doing. After doing some studying of what I need to accomplish, it all seems pretty easy and straight forward. Wish me luck. Will Keep ya'll posted on the progress.

Sounds like either the starter pinion gear or the clutch hub teeth have worn down. Most likely the starter gear.

+1 - Sounds like the starter clutch gear. A common problem on 1200's but I'm not sure on your 1000. The starter clutch, which includes the (likely) stripped gear in question, can be purchased as an assembly for around $50.00 last time I checked. But replacing the the entire starter with an All ***** unit is an excellent idea if you can swing the $$.

Question Part identification

Im thinking part #12 in the attached page. It isn't called a pinion gear on Ronnies but I'm betting that's the booger.

Yep, it's the one that the starter pops out and engages the clutch hub. A pinion is just a gear that drives another (usually larger) gear. It can refer to a lot of different gears in our bikes.

I pulled the primary cover, had a look. That gear looks like it's in GOOD condition and the gears on the clutch hub look good too. It got dark too darn fast for me to pull the clutch off. I work Saturday and right after that is our Co. Christmas party, so it will have to sit until Sunday evening after work. I tugged like he&* on the bolt for the forward primary gear and no loosie. Holy smokes!! It's not reverse thread is it? I dont think so but it wouldn't budge. I wanted to loosen all the bolts so I can make a Youtube video showing the process. There's not one for an 80 sportster.

Should I pull the starter from the other side and have a look at that?

I do appreciate Ya'lls help.

I didn't see anything wrong with the pinion gear, so now I'm thinking it's either the drive gear or drive shaft.

If the gear is fine, I would be looking at the starter clutch. It's possible the internal windings are going bad and it's not getting enough "oomph" to push out and engage all the way. Check the cables and connections as well. Hate to miss a corroded wire that causes the whole thing.

I didn't see anything wrong with the pinion gear, so now I'm thinking it's either the drive gear or drive shaft. I finally found my service manual, so at least I can see how it all ties in.

I pulled the starter itself this morning. the teeth on the starter armature were all chewed up. The drive gear is good. Ordered a new armature from Drag. $98.00 I can live with that.

I got the starter put back together. In the morning I'll have it back on the bike. Then I need to put the primary back on and adjust the clutch & primary chain. Attached is the picture of the old armature with chewed up teeth.
