Default fork tube and slider?????

I just tore apart one of my front forks, Last year I had a bad bouncing problem. I figured it was a bad seal, After taking it apart I noticed that theer was no damper tube sleeve, am I nuts or is there suposed to be one on a 1977? There was everything else,,, O-ring,spring, wear berrings, boot, lock ring, seal, could it be that someone forgot to put it back before I owned the bike? I have yet to get the left fork off, I cant seem to get the alenscrew out of the bottom slider, I just wants to turn and turn and turn, the other came right out. does the fork have to be taken out of the triple tree? I got the right one out but not the left one. any ideas would be helpful.. The weather here is starting to get nice and I want to get this done. Thanks

Daryl...

ok inpact sounds like the right idea.. What about the damper tube sleeve,, Is a 77' supposed to have one. its the peice that sits just past the seal, the manual has me removing the damper tube sleeve passed the seal then removing the seal, (i am replacing the seal) everything else is present and accounted for except the damper tube sleeve. Is there one on a 1977????? Thanks!!

I just did my 77 forks today. The damper tube sleeve, part 12 in the FM drawing, stays up inside the bottom end of the inner fork tube. It does not live down in the lower leg like the drawing shows. YOu just undo the allen bolt in the bottom. Drop the lower leg off, replace the seal and then put it all back together. You can leave the damper rod and the tube sleeve sitting in the upper fork leg while you do it. On mine, it just sits there.

To stop the damper turning when undoing the allen bolt, I took a length of 1/2" round bar and ground a four-sided point about 2" long on one end. Drop it down into the top of the damper, tap it in so the shoulders on the square taper grips the hole in the top of the damper and then undo the allen bolt while holding the rod with vice grips.

Crude but effective.
