Default won't start, need help

recently installed electric start on my 72 sportster, after putting everything back together and polarizing, i went tostart it and it barely turned over(full charge on battery) after a few tries i noticed my battery was extremely hot and it boiled over, now i have no power at all. has anyone dealt with this problem before, could i have wired it wrong? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

By "barely turned over" do you mean that the motor sounded weak like the battery was dead or just turned over one or two times and then the problem?

If the battery got extremley hot as you said then likely what happened was you were pulling a great amount of amps from the battery for a longer period of time than the batter is actually capable of doing. I have actually done this before. In fact just a few months ago. I rebuilt the motor and went to start it but it just wouldn't catch and run. Motor would turn over but nothing after that. Anyways, I was continuing to hold down the starter button for 30 seconds to a minute at length while it tried to start eventually overheating the battery and melting the post. Consider yourself lucky that you didn't start a fire or worse have the battery explode on you.

Let us know about my first question. When I get home I will scan the wiring diagram for the 72 just so you can compare and make sure its right.

I am sorry, I really don't know what I could say about your problem, I was just wondering where you got the electric starter for your 72. I have a 73 and am looking for one, is it a kit, and how much, any direction would be great thanks. you can e-mail kyknights1@aol.com

You need a new battery after installing a starter. A CH pulls a lot less amps (CCA) when starting compared to an XL. Call it 124 for CH and 300 for the XL.

I found these specs. Don't know if they are trustworthy.

hog4u is right you will have had needed to upgrade your battery from this item:
http://www.jpcycles.com/productdetai...e=&search=
Which is a 74 cold cranking amps and 7 running amps battery to this battery:
http://www.jpcycles.com/productdetai...e=&search=
Which is a 240 cold cranking amps and 24 running amps.

Also here are the wiring diagrams for you. You will have to pick which one works for your bike.
