Default lowering 1980 xlh

Intro:My Father-in-law is giving me his old sportster (nice guy) so this will be my first HD. Looking to do a few things to it like paint, lowering, etc. first.

I know this has probably been covered a million times but I wasnt able to find much info on lowering an ironhead, most everything I find is pertaining to a newer sportster. I'm not looking to rigid ride it because my wife will likely be riding with me half the time otherwise I probably would. Just looking to get it low as possible while still maintaininga 'little'suspension.

I was thinking 10" or 11" shocks in the rear anda fork lowering kit up front...? This is based on the information i've found for newer sportstersthough. What do you guys recommend?

Thanks for any info or direction.

About the best you can do is get a set of Progressive rear shocks that will drop the rear an inch, and there's a kit to drop the front an inch. With a rider on the back you shouldn't try & get much lower. There's not much out there for getting the '79-81's closer to the ground.

Yea I was looking at there shocks. The smallest they make is an 11". I'll have to measure the stock ones again I forget what they were. Thats too bad there isn't more for these years, wouldnt think there is that much difference. Might have to explore customizing something.
