Starter Relay !!
Replacing the relay! Following the wire diagram in the manual! The 2 larger terminals which side is positive?? Also the 2 smaller terminals the manual shows 1 of the smaller terminals feeding the harness! On the old relay none of the smaller terminals were even hooked up!! Does anyone have a diagram or easy way to figure out the right hook up of this relay!!

All the terminals are positive. Follow your wiring diagram. Starting at your battery positive post...
Red wire from 'Batt (+)' post and goes to solenoid post.
Off this post, red wire runs to 'Batt terminal' on voltage regulator.
Off Batt terminal another red wire runs to terminal #1 on the starter relay. This is the small terminal on the relay.
Terminal 2 on the relay has a green wire running to the small terminal on the solenoid.
Terminal 3 on the relay has a black wire that goes to the starter button.
So, the electrical flow goes something like this:
Push the starter button. This grounds it out and is the trigger for the following events, causing:
Electricity to flow from 12V sitting there waiting at the voltage regulator terminal.
The 12V flows down to the starter relay terminal #1.....energizes the relay causing 12V to flow from relay terminal #2 to the starter solinoid.
The solinoid is now awake and it kicks in it's contacts and wakes up the starter motor which spins.
Simplified explanation, but that is how it works.........pg

Terminal 1/2/ and 3 on the solenoid are as follows:
Looking straight down at the back side of your solenoid with the posts facing you.
-Terminal 1 is the post on the right hand side which is large and stands up taller then all the rest, it will have the positive cable from the batter going to it.
-Terminal 2 is the last larger post on the left hand side. This has the wire going to the starter motor.
-Terminal 3 is the small post at the bottom. This has the green wire from the relay.

Terminal 1/2/ and 3 on the relay are as follows (and I have two small posts as well):
Looking down at the relay with the posts facing you and the mounting holes on the left and top
-Terminal 1 is the larger post on the bottom of the relay. This is where your red wire from the battery terminal on the regulator will come from.
-Terminal 2 is large post on the top of the relay. This is where the green wire to the solenoid goes.
-Terminal 3 is the small post on the left hand side and it has the black wire to the starter button.

Randy.......
I could not have said it better myself.
In fact, I could not have said it at all!
Thanks for an excellent explanation and excellent photos to go with it.
That should answer all question about wiring up a starter and relay........pg

Here's me re-doing the wiring (which by the way was the first of like 3 undergoings for wiring. I always keep coming back telling myself I could do it better):

What would hapen if the cables on the starter relay where switched around? Also I am not running that relay on my 78. It looks like the one thatmounts under the battery tray.... is that correct? Should I be using this relay? I only ask because I did the wiring on my bike and it starts (sometimes)and runs fine once it gets started, but I have been having some starter and charging problems.
Thanks
