hello i have a late 84 ironhead&nbsp\\; that has been acting funny latley the carb ( just off idle) will spit back thru carb it wont do it at mid range or top end, it has always did it cold but now it does it all of the time,i just put new intake bands on it,also has a bad stumble at about the same rpm once past the stumble it runs great, no idea what jets are in it, should i start there? ps. the motor is all stock including the carb, the factory service manual does not say how to adjust the carb,&nbsp\\; thanks

make sure the advance on the ignition is working correctly if it is you might have some dirt in the carb causing it to run a littie lean.

Sounds like a lean condition due to an air leak at the manifold. Fix the leak at the bands, then move to the carb adjustment when you know the air leak is gone.

CV carb?

&gt\\;...always did it cold but now it does it all of the time...

Did the problem start before or after the intake work?

Good question - it helps to know the specifics of the bike, such as carb model, etc.
If it's a non-cv butterfly carb, the idle mixture screw should be lightly seated, then backed out one and a half turns. This is just a starting point. After the engine is fully warmed up, adjust in very small turns untill it idles smooth. Then the curb idle can be set either with the tach or by ear.
Like GA said, it sounds very much like an intake leak that causes the sneeze you are getting.

I've learned that if you remove the carb from the intake before you install it, it will seal much better. Then install the carb after the intake has been seated as close to the heads as you can get it.
Another help for keeping the band seals tight is to have a carb support bracket to keep the whole thing from sagging under the weight of the carb and air cleaner.
