Default Engine rear mounting bolt

On my '74 XLCH I found out, that the middle bolt in the rear engine/frame bracket was broken in two. The end of the bolt sits in the engine.

Is this maybe a must have? The upper and lower bolt is okay.

Default RE: Engine rear mounting bolt

You may get away with it for a while, maybe longer, but the bolt really needs to be there and tight. The big problem is of course, the engine has to be removed to get at this bolt properly, if not having to split the crankcases.
There was a member who managed to get his broken bolt out of the left hand case and replace it with a new bolt without pulling the engine. This is the single case that I know of someone doing it. Perhaps there are more than one who has extracted the bolt from this miserable location.
The stud is threaded into the left case and the guy who removed his welded a nut onto the end of the stud as I recall and was able to un-thread it. Most of those studs are really stuck in there, so I was surprised by that. In your case the stud is broken so grabbing it by the end in not an option. Good luck with it..........pg
