Default kicker only

have 79 xls roadster, bike has always ran great if I could get it to start. guy who owned previous put chinese starting system in. i replaced w/original parts, hardwired everything inside headlight housing, and still couldn't get it to start(among other various electrical problems). have since stripped entire bike and am contimplating relying only on a new kicker to keep the bars clean and avoid any further electrical dilemas. any feedback???

LOL, another candidate for the Sportster Knee Motorcycle and Rehabilitation Club.

No reason why it will not work fine.
CH was kick only, worked fine, as long as it is kept tuned.

That might not be the easiest thing you have ever done (installing a kick start on your bike)
First off, you have a 1979 model. Did the 1979 come with a K/S lever? I know very little about the models newer than 1974.
This was an oddball year for Sportster. Nothing wrong with the bike, it is just there are a number of things different on it than any other year Sporty.

First thing to check is to see if your frame will allow a kickstart shaft to be used.
Then will the crankcase allow it?
Finally there are a bunch of parts needed to put it all together.

It is a big job if you want to put a kick start on an early model Sportster that originally came with a K/S using a kit for the install.
My understanding is the parts (that are now made in Asia) do not fit together well and it takes a bunch of fitting to make a kit work.
Good luck with the project and let us know how it turns out..........pg
