Default control module

I have a 84 bobber that has different parts. I was looking in the manual for the ignition module and cannot find it. I traced out sensor plate wires and it seems to go to the coil . I was wondering if you can put the points into this bike intead of the ignition module. I know that the coil would have to be different etc. I bought this bike and it seems that in 79 they have points and no ign. module. The motor is a 84 just need some help.I know that I have to take the ign. cover off to see if there is points, just wondering if this possible to do this.Would the timing be different. I want to check all this out before i have a problem later on Thanks for your help

Not sure about all that, but in 79 the had electronic ignition. My 79 came with electronic ignition, albeit cheap.

according to the manual in 79 the ign. module is behind the cover. mine is suppose to be external. and there is fly weights etc. 84 does not show this. maybe yours was changed to electronic ign.

You should be able to buy the conversion kit for your model. V-Twin sells one they say is for converting late model electronic type back to points. It is the same parts as the 70 to 78 model. You will need everything including the advance weights for your model. Change the coil and regap the plugs.

On a stock '84 the ignition module would be located under the battery tray. You can put a points ignition in that year engine also. I'd pop the cover off and see if there are points in it, but it seems like why would someone put points in it when electronic is more efficient. Timing would stay the same, you would just have to set point gap if that is what is in it.
'79 had the V-Fire II electronic ignition system.
