Default Top end rebuild

31,000 miles it was smoking bad, I was puting engine restore, stp and things like that in with the oil hoping to get through season. oil line failed and leaked out most oil before oil pressure light came on.(oil light only came on under 2000 rpm)
I think all the oil addatives loosened sludge and blocked oil filter plus weakened old oil lines.
Replaced all oil lines, fired up and had too much noise in top end, compression 80 psi front, 30 psi rear. (before oil problems, 120 front, 70 rear)
time to rebuild.
bored 40 over, heads good just dressed and cleaned.
fired right up and ran great. several short rides in neighborhood all good, clutch slipping some. adjusted clutch, went for first ride in a month all went great until I approched a stop sign 5 miles into ride. Pulled in clutch SNAP the cable broke, no cars comming, 5 miles of back roads in second gear timing stop signs and a few lights, got her home without pushing.
now waiting on clutch cable and throttle/idle cables from JP.

JP,

What you experienced with your broken clutch cable is why I always shift her into neutral when sitting at a stop light or if I get lazy and keep her in gear always keep the front brake firmly applied. I don't want a broken clutch cable to launch me into traffic! I'd say if you got 31K miles on your ironhead before needing a topend overhaul you did pretty good. I always used to hear 20k-30k intervals for shovels and Sporties and did my Superglide at about 30k. It wasn't smoking and ran good but I could tell it was tired and the compression was down.
