If you have a 75 XLH with a side oil tank. It holds 3 qts. The primary holds 1.5 pints.

I use and most other people will agree straight 50W oil. The only brand of it I can find around here is Valvoline Racing 50W oil. Best oil for it. Us it in the primary and the oil tank.

The manual for the 79 XLH says to use 40 Weight in the gearbox and the following in the engine:

Medium Heavy grade 75 above 40F ambient.
Special Light grade 58 Below 40F.
Regular Heavy grade 105 ambient over 90F.

I don't know what weights the grades represent, but these oils are still available at the dealership.

I am using 20/50 Valvoline Max Life Synthetic Blend, which has been working well so far, in an 85F ambient. 40 in the trans just like it says.

I use straight 50w Harley oil in the engine, 60w in summer. (Hot here)
Harley Transmission Forumla Plus works good in the trans/primary for me. I have had clutch slip with some other oils. Too many anti-friction additives maybe.
