help someone. i changed the oil and filter, the primary oil and the trans oil in my 05 fatboy last night. the service manual, and the owners manual seem to be wrong on how much oil to put in the oil tank and the primay. the oil tank was full at 3qts although the book says 3.5qts. there is also a drain plug in the bottom of the crankcase, but nothing is stated if oil should be drained there also.but this not really my biggest concern since i can check the trans and engine with a dipstick.. however the primary says to put in 26oz of oil, correctly full of oil should be at bottom of clutch spring. i put in a 1 and half quarts and it still was not at that level so i drained it out and put in the 26ozthe manual called for. so what is up, am i o/k to go ridding today or am i just an iddiot.its sucks that i cant depend on my high dollar harley bible to be correct.. thanks for any advice. im giong riding, its 75 degrees and beautiful. hope i dont burn up my primary thanks kerry..........ride safe all..........
After changing oil, put in 2 and 3/4 quarts of oil, take the bike out
for a good run to warm in up. Let it idel for a couple of minutes,
shut bike off let it sit for a minute or two, check oil and top off
oil tank. will take approx 3 quarts when you are completly done.
Do not remove the drain plug on bottm side of engine.
For your primary put in 1 full quart.
My bike calls for 26oz. put go with the full quart, you will not have any problems.
Hope this helps.
however the primary says to put in 26oz of oil, correctly full of oil should be at bottom of clutch spring. i put in a 1 and half quarts and it still was not at that level
If you use a flashlight to look in the primary, you will probally see the fluid. It's difficult to see otherwise.
thanks guys. i guess i am paranoid.i did as you all said. 1 qt in primary and 3qts in oil tank. rode about 50 miles and all is well. again thanks to all.... kerry.

RE: inaccurate fluid specs
After several of us here had the same thing happen, i.e., added 3 quarts like the manual said and ended up using a turkey baster to suck about 1/2 quart out, I asked the Motor Company for an explanation. The response I got was that a completely dry system will take 3 quarts. As the end user (us) will never experience this situation, I still don't quite understand why in hell they wouldn't mention this little tidbit in the manual. [:@]
some of these bikes have been the sane for many years. so why cant they get their info. correct. i have found many errors in my harley service manual... i still would like to know what the drain plug on the crankcase is and why not drain it too. to get all the dirty oil out as possible.. kerry
I believe that part of the reason is that if you take out ALL the oil, the scavenge side of the pump will be running dry until some of the new oil drips down.
PersonallyIwould rather it have a little dirty oil than no oil at all.
I purchaseda Parts Manual, Service Manual, and a Diagnostic Manual when I got my new Fat Boy. I like having correct documentation.
Following this line of thought...while customizing my new '07 I found several misprints in the Parts Manual.Just typos, wrong reference numbers and the like...but I received the wrong parts as a result!Anyway, I brought it up to my dealerand was told that the MoCo will only accept corrections to the manuals from their dealer's Service and Parts Departments! WTF! My local dealer said they would send my findings in to corporate, but since I was the one directly impacted from the wrong info I would be more motivated to get it corrected! I can read just as well as any employed technician or parts guy! I would think that they (the MoCo) would wantcorrections to ensure the validity of their publications!
Oh well...good tips on the oil! When it comes to Harley-Davidsons and home wrenchers, there is a lot of talent out there on this forum...thanks guys!
