The point gap for a 1974 and earlier is .018. Of that I am sure.
I thought a 1981 would be the same, but I cannot say for certain.
Someone help us out here...........pg

Stock 1981 would have an electronic ignition. 1971 to 78 would be points and the .018 would be correct. If the the 81 was converted to points with the stock 71 to 78 parts the point gap would be the same. Double check to make sure you have the correct ignition parts. The circuit breaker cam for the early electronic ignition is not compatable with points. Check the service manual for your year to make sure that you are setting the timing on the correct mark on the flywheel. I believe in 1981 they changed the markings on the flywheel and the straight line is no longer the advance mark but now represents TDC.

If it is the correct timing cam (narrow lobe / fat lobe) make sure both narrow and fat lobe open the points to .018 If no adv mark on the fly wheels a degree wheel might be in order

i thought it would be electronic ignition too.it is an 81 though.i checked engine vin and it showed to be correct for an 81 xls.i checked it before i timed it and after i timed it with same results.---------i am not really worried about it as it runs good...starts right up and its not missing out.i did replace the coil with a hot coil but it still ran fine before and the points were set at .032.so...i dunno...i have no issues with it really i just wanted to understand it.as long as it runs good i wont be concerned...i am curious though.

YeahI know how you feel I have a 84 bobber and I have to check mine out also.I know that 84 has electronic ign. but I cannot find the module and the coil measure 4.5 ohms which means that coil is for points and not for electronic ign.My bike was changed all over so now I have to get into it to find what I have with the point gap for future info thanks

Default points gap

I'm running points on my twin cam using 75 sportster points and advance, and the factory 18 gap works perfectly.

If your using points you first set the gap ,then you set the timing.
For every .001 your tight ,the timing is advanced by 1 degree. For every .001 your large, the timing is retarded by 1 degree. That's why its important to get the gap set correctly, because it will affect the timing setting.
