Default Leaking Tappet Guides

I had a couple of broken tappet guides when I got my 78. Who knows how long it was ridden like that ! When I had the motor rebuilt I fixed those issue but it still seeps out from under the guide. Soo can I make a gasket or seal it up some way? It puts out enough oil to have a pool about the size of a quarter sitting on the case after a 1 hour or so ride. I dont mind the oil so much I mean the thing is 30 years old !!! but with such low oil pressure i was thing about sealing it up with something. Any other of you guys have this issue? What was your soultion ?

Again thanks in advance for the help.

should be a "O" ring in there to seal it

Item #5 is what he is referring to. This O ring seals the oil from leaking out. Gaskets are not used because if oil gets past the O ring no gasket will keep it from leaking out. Replace your O rings.
Sorry about the rough illustration....pg

I agree with both... I just replaced mine and cleaned up a couple of oil puddles.

Are you sure that the leak is coming from under the guides? Push rod tube leakage could be the cause. The lower tubes have a taper on one end, and are flat on the other. The flat ends have to be in the lifter guides.

Well, there is something wrong there. The only thing you can do is replace the guides that are leaking, and use new O rings when you do it.
Those guides are a press fit into the crankcase. By press fit I mean you have to use a block of wood to hand press them into place. If your guides went in easily without having to press them into place, then there is the reason for the oil leak.
The guides are soft malleable iron and can be distorted or broken quite easily.
Sorry, I don't have any other answer to the problem...........pg

I do have the cork installed but it sounds like PG has my answer. I can pull the guide out very easily so that would explain the isssue.

Thanks

mine leaked and couldnt figure it out. the orings were new. then i cleaned the area real good and made sure i installed the oring on the tube then slid it into the lifter box. that did it. i was putting the oring in the box then sliding the tube in and thats why it was leaking.
