I am still playing around with the oil tank, lines and finishing touches on the bike. I just recently painted the hardtail metallic silver, put on a black solo spring seat, finished the fender struts. Permanently routed all of the electrical, put on the front invader rim (actually another rear rim that I made work on the front). I also put the stock chrome oil tank back on. Here is a pic of what it looks like.
Has anyone ever tried to polish cast iron? I am in the process of polishing up my heads. It has been extrememly time consuming, but I am finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I've attached pictures from day one until now. I bought some Eastwood extreme diamond clear coat to hopefully keep them looking good once I am complete. Has anyone used this product before? Anyone else ever polished cast iron? Am I waisting my time?
This is a first for me - have not seen this before now. Looks good tho.
Will the clear coat stand up to high temperatures? My experience with hi-temp engine paints is that the 600`F products burn off around the exhaust ports and between the fins; need to use the 1200`F [or higher] products.
Calabeast, that is one sweet- looking scoot. I recently purchased a 69 and am in the process of turning her into a show stopper. I know little about sportsters as my last bike was a 76 shovel, but life is all about learning. Love those Invader Mags, had them on my ol shovel, old school classics.I could sure use any input on old school ironhead tech secrets
Well..I hope this holds up, because I sprayed my rear head last night. I guess all I can do is cross my fingers and hope it doesn't flake off. If it does...then I will try to powder coat them with clear.
I spent hours and hours filing, wire brushing, sanding with 240, 600, 500, 1500 grit. It looks almost like chrome from about 1' away. if you get closer than that..you can see some sand marks...but I just couldn't do it anymore. I'll let you know what happens.

I did find that the magneto, and the carb on my bike were where a lot of my problems were orignially. Also, most everything that you buy used off ebay will be in the same shape as the stuff on your bike. Be carefull and read every little detail about something on ebay before you buy it, because most likely you will have to fix or tweek whatever you buy anyways. For a lot of parts Your better off finding a local mechanic and having your stuff fixed. ALso, Do a search on this forum and find the chart that shows you compatible equipment for different years of sportys....came in VERY handy for me.
we have the same wheels, I see that you have the same problem i have, a little rust on some areas, i think i see that from the photos.
i called the manufacturer for a refinish, but i can maybe do that locally, fine scooter
From my working with cast iron blowers i can tell you that it will begin rust the moment after polishing, so you HAVE to give it a protective coating and that choice is up to you.
Thanks. My bike came with the rear invader. It also had a little tiny front round spoke invader with 11" over skinny forks when I bought it. It didn't feel safe to me, so I put the wide glide and another rear invader on the front. If you look close, you'll see that one of the rims is 6 spoke and one is 5 spoke. Does anyone on here know the history of why there are some 5 spoke and some 6 spoke invaders?
I have been thinking about having the rims copper plated instead of chrome when I can afford it. Anyone know of a good place to have this done near Madison Wisconsin?
